What is “We Met in a Tavern”

We Met in a Tavern is a little project I’ve started primarily for career development. You see I work in Marketing. In fact I’m a Marketing Manager. I oversee a large mareting program and a team of weapon specialists who deliver it.

Being the marketing manager, I am now “off the tools”. As such, I can feel some of the skills I acquired in my formative years beginning to with, and I haven’t got space in my normal day to build new ones. I was an SEO specialist (not a world class one either) and moved to management just as things got interesting with AI.

AI has been a game changer for me, both positively and negatively. As someone who has trouble learning new things and gets easily flooded, ChatGPT and friends have helped me hone in on things and not get overwhelmed so much.

So where I’m getting at is that my space of marketing is changing very rapidly (at least tactically) and I need a way to stay on top of tactical advancements as well, as well as reinofrace skills I already have AND develop some I never acquired.

A website is a GREAT way to do this.

Setting up a website gives you a platform to learn a BUNCH of hard skils. Very soon I’ll be able to say:

  • Yes I’ve set up a simple blog website

  • Yes I’ve registered a domain

  • Yes I’ve come up with a business name

  • Yes I’ve made a logo and simple branding.

  • Yes I’ve written blog posts

  • Yes I’ve structured a website, and interlinked between them.

  • Yes I’ve set up basic analytics tools like Google ANalytics and Search Console

  • Yes I’ve set up a simple contact form that has a spam blocker and can capture queries.

  • Yes I’ve set up a marketing automation system to reply to queries maually.

  • Yes I’ve set up an email subscription thing.

  • Yes I’ve set up a newsletter that I can send out to my subscriber list.

  • Yes I’ve published the site and had it indexed by search engines

  • Yes I’ve got it to rank for some keywords.

And that’s just the start. I’ll eventually want to set up several revenue streams (not because I need the money, but because I want to learn).

And from THERE I’ll have reached my ultimate goal: being useful.

In Marketing, it’s not like being a sparky. Your family and friends con’t often call on you in times of need to help with fixing a broken powerpoint.

I LOVE helping people, I just haven’t got a huge amount of useable skills.

The set of skills I can get from this project have been asked of me often AND fall into my general career remit.

So in my next post I’ll go over why I’ve chosen DnD as the focal point.

Love yas xoxo.
